A puppy's first months are a window that matters. During this period, puppies form their working picture of the world — which people, dogs, noises, and places are safe, and which are frightening. A puppy who calmly meets strangers, hears skateboards rattle past, and walks on sand, grass, and pavement grows into a dog who takes Santa Cruz in stride. Why Positive Reinforcement, From the Start
A puppy has never done anything wrong on purpose. Teething is one of many reasons he chews — so are boredom, curiosity, hunger, stress, and pain — and littermate play is one of many reasons he nips. He soils the rug because nobody showed him the alternative. Steve helps you work out which reason you're dealing with. Punishing any of it teaches one lesson only: people are unpredictable. Rewarding the right choices — with food, play, praise, and other real-life rewards, timed well — teaches the lesson you want: good things come from doing what you ask. That is the whole of Steve's training philosophy: "You want your dog to listen to you because he wants to, not because he has to."

Puppy Training Questions
When should I start training my puppy?
Puppies learn from the day they are born, but they don't retain much until they are a little older. My puppy bites and nips constantly. Is that normal?
Usually, but not always. Mouthing is how most puppies explore and play. Now and then there is another reason — including a medical one — and Steve will help you tell the difference. The goal is not to stop it with punishment but to teach, and understand, bite inhibition: a soft mouth, the right chew outlets, and calmer play. This is one of the most common things Steve helps new puppy owners with.
How do I house train a puppy?
With a consistent routine: frequent trips outside, supervision or confinement (for the right dog) in between, and immediate rewards for going in the right place. Punishing accidents teaches a puppy to hide from you, not to hold it. That is the short version — there is more to it, and Steve sets up a house-training plan that fits your home and schedule.
What training method do you use with puppies?
Positive, reward-based, force-free training. No leash pops, no shock or prong collars, no intimidation. As Steve puts it, you want your dog to listen to you because he wants to, not because he has to — and that is doubly true for a puppy forming its first impressions of people.
Do you offer puppy training near me?
Steve trains puppies in homes throughout Santa Cruz County — Santa Cruz, Capitola, Aptos, Soquel, Live Oak, Pleasure Point, Scotts Valley, Felton, and Watsonville. If you live elsewhere, virtual puppy coaching over Zoom or FaceTime works remarkably well, since the sessions are largely about coaching you. Every session is private and one-on-one — Steve does not run group puppy classes.
Do you run puppy classes?
No. Steve isn't teaching group puppy classes at the moment. All puppy training is one-on-one, in your home or over video, and built around your puppy and your household — which is where the habits are forming anyway.
Do you only train puppies?
No. Steve trains dogs of every age — adult dogs, senior dogs, deaf and blind dogs — and helps families choose the right dog before they bring one home. He is also a licensed Family Paws presenter, so expecting parents and families with toddlers can get the dog-and-baby preparation done early.
